Essita Duncan, Esq.

Essita is the principal for Heritage Hills Law, LLC, a boutique estate planning and administration law firm in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Through her practice, Essita educates individuals and families on the importance of becoming good managers of family wealth and leaving a legacy through estate planning. She frequently speaks to women, through her “Real Women Have Estate Plans” campaign and other groups on topics related to estate planning and probate and authors articles encouraging readers to plan to live well.

Over the last nineteen years, Essita has had rich and fulfilling experiences, including serving as an Assistant Public Defender in the Juvenile Division in Baltimore City and legislative counsel for District of Columbia Councilmember Marion S. Barry. While running a general law practice in the District of Columbia, Essita received a Mayoral appointee to the Board of Funeral Directors and was a legal columnist for The Southwester, a local newspaper.

When Essita is not practicing law, she serves as the Chair for Servants Without Borders, a non-profit organization she co-founded in 2009 in the District of Columbia. Through monthly service projects, the organization helps to meet the needs of individuals and communities. In 2016, the group raised more than $10,000.00 to provide a portable shower solution to residents of Flint, Michigan during the water crisis. In 2019, Servants Without Borders raised another $10,000.00 to provide scholarships for the entire seventh grade class at the Cheery Children Education Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

Essita is a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association and the Prince George’s County Bar Association. As a member of the American Bar Association and specifically the Civil Rights and Social Justice Section, she serves as Co-Chair of the Rights of Women Committee and Vice Chair of Elder Affairs Committee. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Political Science in 1998 from the University of the District of Columbia, and earned her Juris Doctorate in 2001 at the Catholic University, Columbus School of Law. For her law school thesis on “The Legality of Incarcerating Youth Offenders in Adult Facilities”, Essita was awarded second place in the National Judge’s Association Essay Contest. She obtained a Masters of Law in 2002 from George Washington University Law School.

Essita resides in Upper Marlboro, Maryland with her husband, Colin Duncan, a Managing Director at Deloitte, and two children, Celeste (10) and Gavin (7).
