Maureen G. Colburn is a lifelong advocate for the empowerment of women and girls. She has worked for over twenty years to create and develop programs that advance educational opportunities for young people. Ms. Colburn was the Founding Executive Director of the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) an innovative all-girls public charter school in Baltimore, which opened in 2009. Ms. Colburn stepped down in July 2015 after seven years at BLSYW and served as a consultant through the transition until June 2016. The school graduated its first class in 2016, with 100% of the girls accepted to college.
Ms. Colburn’s most notable professional accomplishments, in addition to her work in Baltimore, include opening three Young Women’s Leadership Schools in New York City and launching the College Bound Initiative, a program that places full-time college counselors in New York City public schools. Both programs continue to educate and empower over 5000 students each year.
Ms. Colburn has consulted with a variety of charter, traditional public and independent schools. Her primary area of expertise is in the strategic growth and development of education organizations working with clients on administrative capacity, financial management and fund development. She currently serves as the Director of Talent for the Chavez Schools, a network of three charter schools serving over 1000 students in Washington DC.
Ms. Colburn is on the board of the Maryland Alliance of Public Charter Schools and serves on the Education Committee at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington DC. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Theology from Fordham University and a Master of Public Administration in Non-Profit Management from New York University. She enjoys running, cooking and spending time with her husband and children.
