What Is SNAP E&T

Maryland offers Employment and Training (E&T) services to SNAP recipients throughout the state. This program is called SNAP E&T, and its primary goal is to connect people who receive monthly food supplement benefits (SNAP benefits/formally known as “Food Stamps”) to job-driven training programs.

Is There An Application For SNAP E&T Programs?

No, there is no application for this amazing training opportunity. All training programs are free of cost to SNAP recipients, run for an average of 12 to 16 weeks, and train participants for employment in industries that include, but are not limited to, welding, construction, machine operation, manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, and computer technology/IT. All SNAP E&T programs also offer job placement, retention, and support services that help program graduates find and keep employment.

Why Should I Enroll in the SNAP E&T Program?

SNAP E&T employment programs are experienced in helping people overcome barriers to employment, including criminal backgrounds, limited job experience, or limited ability to get to and from work. SNAP E&T can help you move beyond the issues that may have previously made it difficult to work.

Most SNAP E&T training programs offer:

  • Hard skills training in an in-demand industry
  • Soft skills training in communication, customer service, and more
  • Job readiness
  • Job search and placement
  • Industry-recognized certifications and credentials
  • Work experience
  • Transportation
  • Referrals to other community services
  • Resolution of employment barriers, such as a criminal record, legal services, or driver’s licenses
  • Access to items needed to work, such as work clothing, tools, or textbooks
  • Support from a personal career navigator and success coach

Am I Eligible For The SNAP E&T Program?

You could be eligible for SNAP E&T if you are over the age of 16, receive monthly food supplement benefits(SNAP), do not receive Cash Assistance/Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and are able to work upon completion of the program. Each SNAP E&T employment program may have its own additional eligibility requirements. Please contact the employment programs that interest you the most to find out more.

Are There SNAP E&T Program Requirements?

Participation in an employment and training program is voluntary for those receiving SNAP. If you are a healthy adult who is not living with children (known as an Able Bodied Adult Without Dependents/ABAWD), you are subject to special time limits that allow you to get only three months of SNAP benefits unless you are working or actively enrolled in an employment and training program.
