Maggi G. Gaines

Margaret “Maggi” G. Gaines came to Maryland from New York City to attend Goucher College and has lived in Baltimore City ever since.

Maggi studied Political Science and completed coursework in a doctoral program at Johns Hopkins University in American Government. She went on to receive a master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins School of Education, and a master’s degree in Jewish History and Philosophy from the Baltimore Hebrew University.

The nonprofit community was Maggi’s professional home because she is mission driven and deeply committed to lifelong learning, constructive social change as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. Her career in the service sector included leadership positions as Executive Director of the Baltimore Jewish Council; Regional Director of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; founding Executive Director of Baltimore Reads/Baltimore City Literacy Corporation, and later founding Executive Director of Spark/Partnership for Service and Vice-President for Partnerships and Service Learning at Jewish Funds for Justice. Maggi was Director of Development and Communications at Maryland Family Network and Senior Vice-President for Philanthropy at the Maryland Food Bank and served as Director of Development and Strategy at the Pearlstone Center. Maggi facilitates mergers between non-profits leading to more effective service to constituents and more effective stewardship of resources. She served as a consultant for local, state, and national organizations and foundations. She studied at the Kennedy School of Harvard University in a program for senior leaders in state and local government.

As a lifelong learner Maggi trained as a facilitator in Immunity to Change (Harvard School of Education), and as a facilitator for Wise Aging. She participated in The Leadership and Leadership Maryland and studied photography at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Through Mind at Work, Maggi continues to do consulting work: leadership coaching as a professional development tool, training for boards leadership and nonprofit professionals in strategic thinking, and values clarification around focused on organizational mission and values.

Maggi has two wonderful adult children, each with a spouse/life partner and four amazing grandchildren. Maggi spends a serious time every day outside walking (or is it being walked by) her four-year-old dog.
