Maryland Commission for Women


Internship Program

The Maryland Commission for Women’s internship program is part of our commitment to mentoring and supporting young leaders. We welcome undergraduate and graduate students to work with our team of staff and volunteer Commissioners as we work to advance solutions and to expand social, political and economic opportunities for all women in Maryland.

Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates are pro-active and ambitious undergraduate or graduate students with a demonstrated interest in women’s issues, social justice, and civic engagement. Applicants should have strong writing and research skills, comfort with social media, and experience with community or student organizations. Experience with women’s issues or Maryland politics is a big plus!

Responsibilities
Interns at the CFW work on a variety of projects and tasks. These include policy, communications, research, and administrative tasks:

  • Conducting research on various issues affecting women in Maryland.
  • Monitoring federal, state and local legislation that affects women and families.
  • Assisting with outreach to other organizations or groups involved with issues of concern to women and families.
  • Collaborating with the Commission for Women’s Policy and Legislative Committee and supporting their activities.
  • Assisting with the coordination of public programs and events, including our signature Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame Awards
  • Developing monthly email newsletter content
  • Updating Facebook, X (Twitter) and Instagram pages

How to Apply, Hours, and Compensation
Internships are available to students during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Admission into the internship program is rolling.

Internship programs are hybrid—students will work from home and at the Commission for Women office in Rockville, MD. Hours vary depending on a person’s schedule. However, we generally require a 20 hour a week commitment.
Interns are paid $16.85 an hour.

  • A résumé and cover letter stating your reasons for applying. Please be sure to address any topics within the commission that interest you.
  • Dates and hours of availability.
  • A list of goals you wish to achieve during your internship
  • A small writing sample—no more than 2-3 paragraphs

Applicants will also be asked to participate in an in-person interview.
